Fiestas de la Libertad 2026: Circasia celebrates 142 years of history and tradition

Circasia is getting ready for a new edition of the traditional Fiestas de la Libertad (Freedom Festival), a celebration that brings together the culture, the music, the country customs and the pride of one of the most representative towns in northern Quindío.

In 2026 the town known as the Municipio Libre del Quindío (Quindío's Free Town) marks 142 years since its founding. Through August its streets will once again become meeting places for residents, visitors, artists, small businesses and families who come to enjoy the celebration.

First confirmed activities

The general programme has not been officially published yet, but some of the activities that will be part of the festivities are already known.

• Horse parade: scheduled for Saturday 1 August 2026.
• Reinado de la Libertad: the town council opened and then extended registration for this year's contestants.
• Cultural and community activities: artists, cultural collectives, entrepreneurs and local organisations are expected to take part.

Dates, times, routes, concerts and other events will be added to this article once the Circasia town council publishes the full official schedule.

A celebration with its own identity

The Fiestas de la Libertad are one of the most important cultural gatherings in Circasia. The traditional programme combines arts, sports, recreational and family activities, along with spaces that highlight the town's rural and coffee-growing roots.

Among the most anticipated events of each edition are the Carnaval de la Libertad, the cultural parades, the comparsas (costumed street troupes), the live music, the craft fairs and the traditional Yipao parade.

These activities allow artists, cultural organisers, shopkeepers and local entrepreneurs to share their talent with everyone visiting the town during the festival.

Circasia: freedom, history and culture

Circasia was founded on 10 August 1884 and is known for a history tied to the values of freedom, equality and respect for different ways of thinking.

One of the places that best represents that identity is the Cementerio Libre (Free Cemetery), founded in 1933 as a place where anyone could be buried regardless of their religious beliefs. Today it is one of the town's most emblematic historic sites.

During the festival you can also walk through the main square, discover cafés and restaurants, visit local businesses and explore the rural landscapes that surround the town.
