Fiestas de la Libertad 2026: Circasia postpones its celebrations after the earthquake

The traditional Fiestas de la Libertad de Circasia 2026 have been postponed indefinitely following the earthquake that affected Quindío on August 10.

The decision aims to prioritise emergency response, the assessment of homes and infrastructure, and the work of local relief and risk-management agencies before holding events involving large crowds.

The celebrations have not been permanently cancelled

Current information indicates that this is a postponement rather than a definitive cancellation. The Circasia Mayor’s Office is expected to announce new dates once conditions allow the programme to resume safely.

The suspension includes activities such as parades, sporting events, concerts, main-stage shows and other public gatherings that were part of the municipality’s anniversary celebrations.

Circasia’s priority is now recovery

Institutional efforts are currently focused on assessing homes, urban and rural infrastructure, public services and the different impacts caused by the earthquake.

Firefighters, police, Civil Defence and risk-management teams continue to support the emergency response, which means that some of the personnel and logistical resources normally assigned to the festivities must remain available for recovery and public safety.

A celebration that will have to wait

The Fiestas de la Libertad are an important part of Circasia’s identity and one of its most significant cultural gatherings. Every year they bring together music, traditions, parades, sporting activities and community events linked to the history of the Municipio Libre del Quindío.

In 2026, Circasia marks 142 years since its foundation. The celebrations will have to wait, but the spirit behind them remains present in a community that is now focused on recovery and mutual support.

Visiting and supporting local businesses can also help

The postponement of the festivities does not mean Circasia is closed to visitors. Whenever local authorities and safety conditions allow, visiting its cafés, restaurants, shops and local businesses can be a responsible way to contribute to the municipality’s economic recovery.

Before travelling, check official recommendations and avoid entering buildings or areas that remain restricted as part of post-earthquake inspections.

The celebration can wait. Circasia must first care for its people, recover its spaces and come together again.

When will the Fiestas de la Libertad be rescheduled?
